About

Currently, as part of my Masters degree in Applied Linguistics, I am writng about Emirati Identity discourse. I have chosen a Critical Applied Linguistics (CAL) framework to enter into texts; written and oral. Ethnographic methods from Socioliguistics will be used, as well as Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to gather analysed data for interpretation. An emic-etic approach will be conducted when co-creating informal interview material.

The data has been collected over a two year period to provide a 'saturation' of data and rich description as well as repreated observation over time to 'track' how the discourse has been framing the construction of an Emirati Identity, which fluctuates in a non-linear pattern depending on social "moods".

It is hoped that the results of this research will provide a sound example of the application of a CAL framework to raise "critical" questions about the use of English and the linguistic/media and citizenship policies of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is also hoped that the descriptive nature of the analyses will provide telling examples of UAE society across 2008-2010 for researchers in other fields such as sociolinguistics, anthropology and other humanities areas.
